Review: MUA Red Lipstick in Shade 13

MUA Red Lipstick in Shade 13 back together again!
MUA Red Lipstick in Shade 13 back together again!

I’ve been desperate to try one of these infamous £1 lipsticks since December last but it took a while for Superdrug to begin to restock the MUA shelves.

I went for Shade 13 because try as I might, I struggle with matte as it is so drying. I’m into my glosses and I have only just started trying mattes since starting this blog.

This is a true creamy red. I actually love this £1 gem! It glides on easily and has good staying power. It stays put and does not bleed so there’s no need for lip liner. It produces the bold colour I want with minimal effort and it actually brightened my mood when I wore it! It perfectly suits my skin tone and is not drying in the slightest.

Thanks to Beauty in Beta I now know that the coloured part at the bottom comes off so I can use a lip brush to apply colour without messing up the bullet.

This is my new favourite red!

Review: MUA Liquid Eyeliner in Shade 4

I bought this MUA Liquid Eyeliner in Shade 4 as I wanted to have a grey liquid liner and I didn’t want to spend £20 on an Artliner from Lancôme. What I actually got from this bottle was a highly reflective pewter!

As with Shade 2, the applicator is a sponge which draws a very thin line and the consistency of the liquid is such that you need to apply one coat, let it dry, then apply another.

The colour is amazing but if it cracks like Shade 2 that will be disappointing. The plus side is that it only cost £1. Looks like I still need that Artliner!

MUA Liquid Eyeliner in Shade 2 - not easy to work with!

I bought this MUA Liquid Eyeliner in Shade 2 as I wanted a matte or lacquer petrol blue/teal liquid liner. What I got was a dazzlingly bright metallic sky blue liner!

The best thing about this liner is the brightness of the colour. It really made my eyes pop- I think I’ll call it a feature liner!

Now, the practicalities. The applicator is not a brush, it’s a pointed sponge which produces a very, very thin line. So thin I had to draw a second line to thicken it.

The liquid itself is also thin- it’s easy to accidentally scrape up the line you just drew as the applicator is not a brush.

The best way to apply this is to paint on a line, wait for it to dry then paint on another layer. On the second coat you will get a nice, bold colour.

I wore this all day and noticed that it cracked and bits flaked off which is such a shame as the colour is spectacular.
It was worth trying, for £1!

Review: MUA Pro-Base Fixing Mist

MUA make-up fixing spray
MUA make-up fixing spray

I don’t have a setting spray so I can say I needed this Makeup Academy/MUA Pro-Base Fixing Mist! I thought it was worth a try for £4 from Superdrug.

I don’t usually wear a full face of make-up but I still want something to keep my blusher or bronzer in place. I’ve tried this on two days when I did wear a full face which needed to last and I have to say, I’m going to have to keep looking for a fixing spray.

It goes on quite wet which is fine for me, and leaves me with a dewy look.  It has a slight scent of green tea which I liked! It feels tight on my skin which I guess is the fixing power working and this fades after a couple of hours.  I have dry skin so this is probably why I notice the tightening. The problem is that it fixed the MUA bronzer fine, and held it most of the day, but it dulled my shimmery Seventeen bronzer which I used to highlight.  I therefore didn’t have the make-up look I was going for.  Plus, I needed it to last all day and it didn’t.

Sorry MUA, this is another miss for me.

After my disastrous experience with the MUA Luxe glitter palettes, plus the fact that Superdrug was out of stock of most MUA products for months, I didn’t think I’d try any more MUA.  However, this time I was in luck.

There was some more stock than usual and I wanted to try a few other products – not all products in any range will be good, so I decided to give MUA another chance.  Plus, lots of bloggers like MUA, especially the nail colours and matte lipsticks.

I bought:

  • Pro-Base Fixing Mist as I don’t have a setting spray and for £4, I might as well try it.  If Kiko was nearby I might have bought their version but there wasn’t!
  • Nail Polish in Pistachio Ice Cream, a pale mint green- very spring and very pretty.  I simply couldn’t resist, especially for £1.  Plus the tiny bottle is so cute!
  • Lipstick in Shade 13, a vibrant red.  I wanted this since I saw Joanna Loves mention that one of the matte reds she uses is Shade 1.  When I needed a matte red it was nowhere to be found so I bought MAC Ruby Woo instead. After looking online and testing in the shop, I decided that Shade 13 is the one for me.  I guess you could call it a satin finish.  Shade 13 was also unavailable for ages but I managed to get it today.
  • Liquid eyeliner in Shade 2, a metallic blue-turquoise. It’s pretty, and also £1, so no reason not to try it!
  • Liquid eyeliner in Shade 4, a metallic grey which can look silver or pewter.  I just like grey eyeliner!
  • Bronzer in Shade 3.  This one is completely matte.  All my others are shimmery.

I can’t wait to try this all out!

Added to My Collection: MUA Pistachio Ice Cream

The name is irresistible, the colour is a very pretty mint green, the tiny bottle is adorable and the price was amazing- £1!  I had to try this nail colour by MUA in Pistachio Ice Cream.  I’ll be sure to post when I’m in a spring mint green mood!
