I wanted to try a high street shampoo and conditioner because being a shampoo snob is expensive! I went for Maui Moisture because I liked Maria Tumolo’s review for Brown Beauty Talk. She reviewed the Revive and Hydrate Shea Butter range but whilst I was in the shop I didn’t remember that! I picked up the Nourish and Moisture Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner. Anyway, the Shea Butter range is for dry and damaged hair and although my hair is dry, I wouldn’t call it damaged.
The interesting thing about Maui Moisture is that the first ingredient is aloe juice. I wasn’t sure how this would make a difference until I first tried it. The products do not contain: mineral oils, silicones, SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate), sulphate surfactants, synthetic dyes or ALES (I’m not sure what this is – please help me out!). The products are vegan and contain pure coconut water in addition to the aloe juice. They also highlight “creamy coconut milk, sheer guava oil and wholesome mango butter”. They seem like something I would eat for dessert rather than put in my hair!
The shampoo was a surprise – I struggled to get it out of the bottle at first. Rather than being smooth and creamy, it is very viscous. I don’t know how to describe it, perhaps like slime (forgive me, I have a young child)! Or maybe custard. It blobs out of the bottle rather than pours out and you can turn your hand upside down and it will not fall off. Also, it doesn’t spread, it just moves to where you rub it. Very interesting! Despite all of this, it spreads and rubs into my hair nicely. Most of the time I can get away with one shampoo rather than having to rinse and repeat. I get a thorough but gentle cleanse from this shampoo and yes, it does smell good enough to eat!
The conditioner has a thinner consistency which was initially unexpected as it behaved like a “normal” conditioner (bearing in mind the shampoo texture) and a slightly different scent although still coconutty and mango-y. As per the directions, I applied a generous amount and left for 3-5 minutes and I preferred to put on a shower cap. I feel I get a better result that way. My hair was left feeling conditioned and smooth but not so smooth as to kill the curl.
The Nourish and Moisture Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner claim to hydrate, detangle and be gentle on the hair. I agree with those claims and would buy them both again. I got mine from Superdrug where both are usually £8.99 but are currently 5.99. Also, Superdrug does 3 for 2 offers.
